What Causes Hypermobility?
Hypermobility is a condition characterized by excessive flexibility and range of movement in joints and spinal segments. Normally, ligaments and tendons provide stability to the joints by holding them together. However, in individuals with hypermobility, these connective tissues tend to be weaker and more stretchy/bendy than usual, resulting in joint and spinal instability. This increased mobility can make the affected joints more prone to injury and dislocation.
One well-known condition associated with hypermobility is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a group of genetic connective tissue disorders. EDS encompasses several subtypes, with the most common being the hypermobile type (hEDS). People with hEDS often exhibit joint hypermobility along with other characteristic symptoms such as stretchy skin, low blood pressure, allergies, GI issues, and nerve pain. EDS is typically caused by defects in the structure or production of collagen, a key component of connective tissues.

While hypermobility can be a genetic condition affecting all joints, it is important to note that not all individuals with hypermobile joints experience symptoms. In fact, for many people, joint hypermobility may not cause any significant problems and can even be advantageous in certain contexts. Athletes, gymnasts, dancers, and musicians, for example, may benefit from the extra range of motion provided by hypermobility, which can enhance their performance and abilities in their respective disciplines.

However, in some cases, hypermobility can lead to symptoms and complications. The excessive movement and instability in the joints can result in pain, joint dislocations, and frequent injuries. Individuals with hypermobility may experience recurrent sprains, strains, or even joint subluxations and full dislocations. This can affect their daily activities, mobility, and overall quality of life.
It is worth noting that hypermobility is a spectrum, and its impact can vary greatly among individuals. Some may experience mild symptoms that are easily manageable, while others may have more significant challenges that require a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists in rheumatology, physical therapy, and pain management.

What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS)?

The Ehlers Danlos Society says Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of connective tissue disorders that can be inherited and are varied both in how they affect the body and in their genetic causes. They are generally characterized by joint hypermobility (joints that stretch further than normal), skin hyperextensibility (skin that can be stretched further than normal), and tissue fragility.
EDS are currently classified into 13 different subtypes with each having a set of criteria that help guide diagnosis. One thing they all have in common, however, is that each type is defined as a specific problem in making or using collagen.
Understanding your hypermobility and EDS pain diagnosis and treatment:
Understanding your hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) pain diagnosis and treatment involves a comprehensive approach that addresses both the management of symptoms and the improvement of overall health and well-being. Treatment strategies aim to enhance joint stability, reduce pain, and improve the quality of life for individuals with hypermobility-related conditions.
One of the key components of managing hypermobility and EDS pain is physical therapy. A skilled physical therapist can develop a tailored exercise program to strengthen the muscles surrounding the affected joints, improve joint proprioception, and enhance overall stability. By focusing on building strength, endurance, and coordination, physical therapy aims to provide better support to the joints, reduce the risk of injuries, and alleviate pain.

In addition to physical therapy exercises, other techniques can be used to enhance joint stability and support. Rock tape, a specialized elastic tape, can be applied to provide additional support to the hypermobile joints. It can help improve proprioception, decrease pain, and enhance joint alignment. Bracing or orthotic devices may also be utilized to stabilize the joints, particularly during physical activities or when additional support is needed. These devices can help limit excessive joint movement, reduce strain on the ligaments, and minimize the risk of dislocations or injuries.
In some cases, regenerative injections may be considered as part of the treatment plan. These injections, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or prolotherapy, aim to promote tissue healing and regeneration. They can be used to target specific areas of pain or joint instability. PRP injections, for example, involve using a patient’s own blood components rich in growth factors to stimulate tissue repair and reduce inflammation. Regenerative injections can provide long-lasting pain relief and support the healing process in damaged tissues.
In conjunction with targeted treatments, a holistic approach to functional medicine can be beneficial for individuals with hypermobility and EDS. Functional medicine focuses on optimizing overall health and addressing underlying imbalances that may contribute to pain and symptom manifestation. This approach may involve nutritional counseling, supplementation, stress management techniques, and lifestyle modifications tailored to the individual’s specific needs. By addressing factors such as diet, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and gut health, functional medicine aims to improve overall well-being and support the body’s healing processes.
It is essential to emphasize that the treatment of hypermobility and EDS pain requires a multidisciplinary approach. A team of healthcare professionals, including physical therapists, pain specialists, geneticists, and other specialists, can collaborate to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the individual’s specific needs and goals.

Dr. Sebastian is truly one of the most caring, compassionate, and professional doctors I have ever met. I wish all doctors took the time to care the way he does.
Dr Klisiewicz is amazing. After years of searching for the right diagnosis for my teenager, one pediatrician neurologist sent her to him. Dr Klisiewicz was the first one to point to the diagnosis : Ehlers Danlos Syndrom (EDS). Now, where no other doctor is helpful, he is the one helping her through exercise, diet, supplements, PRP or prolotherapy and different methods. He listens, is caring and has a huge impact on my teenager daily life, mobility and ability to practice the last sport left for her.
Dr. Sebastian and his staff truly go above and beyond to identify the root cause of pain and make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. I can’t speak highly enough of the compassion and exceptional care I have received at Integrative Rehab Medicine. I have unusual and varying symptoms due to hypermobility, and Dr. Sebastian uses innovative procedures to help not only manage my pain but also to ultimately rebuild my stability. He is a doctor who truly takes the time to listen to every patient — even those who may have been passed around by other doctors.
